2027: Thugs disrupt PDP Convention as Jonathan emerges Turaki faction’s presidential candidate

PDP Convention on Jonathan

A convention organised by the interim leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, descended into chaos yesterday, after political thugs invaded the venue, assaulting journalists and party members shortly after former President Goodluck Jonathan was affirmed as the faction’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The convention, initially scheduled to hold at the A-Class Park and Event Centre in Abuja, faced early setbacks after security agents barricaded roads leading to the venue. The development followed a directive by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which warned hotels and event centres against hosting political groups not recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In response, organisers moved the affirmation ceremony to a private residence in Area 10, Abuja, where prominent party figures gathered for a brief event. Jonathan was notably absent from the ceremony, prompting party leaders to receive the certificate on his behalf.

Former Information Minister, Jerry Gana, who chaired the convention committee, presented the Certificate of Return, while House of Representatives PDP Caucus Leader, Fred Agbedi, received it on behalf of the former president. Also present were Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, delegates, former ministers, state officials and supporters.

Following the presentation, party leaders and delegates returned to the A-Class Event Centre to continue convention activities. However, proceedings were abruptly disrupted when armed thugs stormed the venue wielding sticks and other dangerous weapons.

Witnesses said the attackers harassed participants, assaulted journalists covering the event and stole mobile phones and other valuables. The violence triggered panic, forcing party leaders, guests and supporters to flee for safety as the convention was brought to an abrupt halt.

The incident marks the latest twist in the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP, with rival factions continuing to battle for legitimacy ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
